2021 is a momentous year for the town of Beverley. It marks 1300 years since the Anglo-Saxon bishop John of Beverley died, in the monastery which he founded here. By making Beverley (known then as Inderawuda) his final home, John changed the course of the town’s history.
It is an amazing history which is being celebrated later this month in a festival of ideas, events, community, family, talks, film, real ale, & more. Beverley 1300 runs from 22nd – 25th October 2021, and a number of the events and activities are being held in and around St Mary’s.
Highlights include:
- ‘Paths of Life’, which will see 1300 scallop shells in the church for people to collect for free throughout the festival (no booking necessary).
- ‘In the Footsteps of St John’, a free mini-pilgrimage trail around the centre of Beverley from 10am-4pm on Sat 23 Oct (no booking necessary).
- ‘Excellent drink and miraculous abundance‘, a beer tasting and talk with international brewing expert Dr Dawn Maskell (who went to St Mary’s Primary School and Beverley High School) at 7.30pm on Sat 23 Oct (tickets £10).
- ‘My Journeyman Years’, a free talk by the foreman of the restoration works at St Mary’s, master stonemason David Switalla, at 11am on Mon 25 Oct.
